Product Description

“Obama’s First 100″ is a collection of drawings originally created as a way to exercise artistic creativity on a daily basis. For months, two artists watched closely as the presidential transition unfolded, looking at multiple sources to confirm facts and strip away any insignificant commentary and opinion. Upon completion they looked at their hundred illustrations and asked, “now what?”

The result is this book, created to inform and entertain those who missed the events of some of the most significant days in recent history due to the distractions of life and the monotonous nature of other media sources. By publishing their images, the artists behind dfrnt hope they can help people of all ages catch up on past political news in order to better understand current and future political events.

About the Authors / Illustrators

Recently married, the two artist working as “dfrnt” began collaborating on art shortly after they first met. Originally from Miami Florida and Lennox California, they thrive on correcting the others’ mistakes and creating something together that’s more unique than what each could achieve on their own.

Having attended and graduated art school, they strive to create informed work across various media that leaves the viewer room to explore both visually and critically.

Time to be artists

by dfrnt on August 9, 2010 in Apparel,Art,Books,Life

Just wanted to summarize where we are.

Life

Tony’s job at an animation studio ended on Friday after almost 3 years, he thought up a 2 minute animation test to work on so that’ll keep him from getting rusty. Mia is about to finish bartending school. Plus we’re engaged now, so we gotta plan a small wedding, it’s in few months.

Books

Finally, we have time to move on these.  We’re learning inDesign so we can A) design our next two books with it and B) put out digital iBooks and kindle versions. We’ll be out and about promoting our first book in 2 weeks,  the digital version should be out in about 3.  Aside from the Obama books, there’s 1 book planned that will be a compilation of short stories we’ve tossed around between the two of us.

Art

This is finally getting the proper focus, we changed our branding from Art & Culture Apparel to “dfrnt Art & Apparel”.  Art comes first at dfrnt, yea I know, we started with books up there, but come on there’s over 100 drawings in those, that’s gotta be art.  Thought, uniqueness, and appeal are our primary focus.  That’s how we approach our apparel designs, prints, and books.  We’ll be in at least 2 art shows soon, possibly 4.  We’re finishing up our first series of traditional work, and starting on our second.  We’ll also be visiting elementary school classrooms and giving little workshops to inspire kids to get into art, the first visit is next month. Let’s see, those Pin and Spool comic strips, we have a few more thought out so just gotta ink em up and post em.  There’s at least two new properties we’ve dusted off recently to join Pin & Spool, they’ll be realized as comic strips as well, very soon, one may even be animated afterwards, it’s a ridiculously simple concept so it would easily translate to animation that wouldn’t take long to do. So that’s 3 official character focused comic strips, finally there’s a fourth property we’ll be developing and posting on this blog as well, it will be a video one. More on that soon.

Apparel

There’s so much we’re doing we decided we needed to focus on the art first for credibility’s sake, the books second to get the dfrnt name out to a bigger audience, and apparel third.  The clothing industry is a beast, you need to be prepared seasons ahead and it’s really time consuming.  Moving on we will only put out a new design when it’s an awesome one. You will only be able to get our stuff from our site or outdoor events we attend, and it will be made in limited numbers so act while it’s there.  Don’t worry, we do have one of those awesome designs coming soon.

Business

We’ll be sending in the proper documents to the copyright office to protect all our work, and finally, learning and using quickbooks instead of spreadsheets.

Ok, tired of typing.  There’s a lot going on as you can see, you should see the To Do list i’m working on.  We’re not sure when we’ll have time like this to focus on our dfrnt work so we’re not going to waste a minute.  Check back frequently and tell your friends, you’re about to witness an artistic explosion.

Book Sighting….

by dfrnt on September 21, 2009 in Books

dfrntBOOK_web

So, you know that mythical book we keep referring to every now and then?  We just got our sample, we’re really happy with it so far, we just have some minor adjustments to make here and there (image tweaks, text adjustments, better paper, etc).

It’s a 9″ by 7″, 206 page, 101 original illustration, beast of a project we have been working on since January of 09, a large part of why we’ve been such social outcasts since we started dfrnt art & apparel .  The final book should be ready for sale by October 1st… ish.

Another image from our upcoming book, Kennedy celebrating his 77th birthday earlier this year. We’re not releasing many images from our book before publishing but thought that this image would be a good way of remembering him. Rest in peace.
