Every day offers free motivation if you stop to notice it.

dfrnt is an independent art brand started by two artists, Tony & Mia Cabrera. We focus on creative art across various media.
So we may have mentioned this earlier, but since Saturdays are the only day we take off, it gives us a little bit of time to have some sorta social life when we’re not at our day jobs or focusing on our dfrnt work the rest of the time. Here’s a simple clip we put together of a mariachi group performing at a wedding we attended a few weeks ago on a Saturday night before one of our art shows. We believe artists are shaped by their culture and experiences, as well as by how greatly they seek to understand and interpret those aspects, so documenting some of our miscellaneous Saturday experiences may be beneficial in understanding the art created by dfrnt. Oh and for those who were there, does anyone know the name of the group who’s playing the song? We want to give them some credit, all we know is the original song’s title, “el columpio” which translates to “the swing”.

With gas prices easily averaging over $4 a gallon in LA, we decided to do something to cut down on how much gas we’re using. We’ve been talking about getting a bike for a while for local errands and we finally got one, a beach cruiser to take it nice and easy. Most things like the post office, bank, grocery and even art store are easily within biking distance, so its time to flashback to our childhood where we’d bike for miles to run errands, get some fresh air and just enjoy the day.

For copyright purposes, you may have to watch the video on YouTube, just click on the notice if it appears and it will take you there. Also, if it doesn’t say 480p in the lower right of the player after hitting play, click on that number and select 480p for a sharper looking video. If you like the music track, pay for a download, well worth it.
In the spirit of sharing more about us as artists, I decided to put this video together of my morning drive. Since I got a new full time job, which I love <3, there’s been very little time to work on our dfrnt projects, so getting up early to beat the traffic is the only way to squeeze in some time before work. Come along for this 6am, 21 mile drive from Pasadena to Santa Monica. Also, check out Macaco when you get a chance, consistently awesome musical artist.

Just a heads up, we’re in the middle of moving and have limited online access at the moment, we should be back online by this Sunday…

We’re working on a few things at the moment and everything is at a work in progress stage so there’s no work to show til at least this weekend. While one of us is busy working a full time job, the other is busy preparing to move to our new place this weekend. I’ve been waking up early and working on our dfrnt work before I really start work around 9am. One of the many advantages of being up so early is seeing the sunrise every morning, that image is straight from the camera phone. If that doesn’t remind you of the opportunity every new day brings I don’t know what will.

So living in Old Town Pasadena has its benefits, a major one is that the Rose Parade is only steps away and every new years there’s about a million visitors from all over the place who come to check it out, so there’s a fun energy that night, we might post more of those pics later.
One negative to all those people is all the trash that’s left behind but Pasadena does a good job of getting rid of it all withing a day or two, we actually need one more photo to show the final product of the street cleaning. Documenting the build up and the aftermath is actually the main reason for these pics, maybe next year we’ll stand in one place and photograph the actual parade.

So we just got back from dropping off our painting at the venue for the next show we’ll be a part of. Those who attended our last show have already seen the piece, however I recommend you stop by anyway to check out the rest of the pieces, have a drink, and help raise some funds for a great cause. The space is a nice size, we snapped a BEFORE pic while we were there, they’re setting up the show tomorrow. There’s sponsors involved as well, remember those I LOVE BOOBIES bracelets some schools were complaining about a few weeks ago, the Keep A Breast people are responsible for that, proceeds for the show will be going to them. We’ll be there for about two hours that night, we’re still trying to wrap up the pieces for next weekend’s show, which are due at the gallery this Sunday! Oh, there will also be bodypainters, two models will be painted, after they’re done, guests are welcome to volunteer. So, open bar, art, bracelets, and shirts for sale as well this Saturday night. Here’s some links with more info about the show…

We just dropped off our 3 pieces for the show tomorrow night, it’s at the Daydream Republic in LA, an art/event space. The building is the corner of Jefferson and Chesapeake Ave, it has this huge mural by EL MAC & RETNA on the side, awesome. Click on the chocolate strawberry on our sidebar for more info.
