Special Effects, lasers and explosions make everything better right? Nope, sadly we went to check this movie out, despite the negative reviews, hoping the critics were out of touch, or maybe that there would be something entertaining happening somewhere, or that it would at least be better than transformers 2. We were wrong all over the place. This has to be the last movie we go watch just because we want popcorn and soda, we like doing these reviews but we’ve been disappointed too many times in a row knowingly going into bad movies, Wolverine, Transformers 2, Bruno, and now this one.
First off the lead actor, Tatum, I’m sure he’s a cool guy in real life, but as far as acting goes, he’s hoooorrible. His voice is so monotone, it feels like he’s just reading off a script, sorta like,…”hi my name is Duke, I like to eat sandwiches, oh no, there’s a bomb going off, and I like french fries too….” do you realize how when you read the bomb part you didn’t change how you said that, a sense of urgency was missing? That’s the way he reads all his lines. And every time he had a close up, he wouldn’t stop flexing his jaw muscles, every single time…. every …. single …. time. Someone must like it.
Halfway through the movie I realized I was hating it, so I stopped and tried to get into it, really give it a chance. It never worked. I just kept thinking to myself, they obviously had a ton of cash to throw around with all the effects, there was some cool action sequences here and there, how hard can it be to make a good action movie?
There were too many problems with this film, generic characters, the coolest one never said a word, perhaps that’s why we liked him, crappy dialogue would have ruined him too, throw in a lame romance, an evil scientist who willingly put himself in the situation he’s in, yet blames others somehow, Duke puts everyone in danger by not taking out his girl as soon as possible yet he’s a good soldier, the list goes on and on. Sadly, even with all the negatives, it still makes almost $60 million in its opening weekend.
Don’t let the studios keep making horrible movies like this, go watch District 9 this weekend and skip Joe if you didnt catch it last week, if you really need to satisfy your military/ninja cravings go rent 1985′s “American Ninja” a much better film.
