The Help

by dfrnt on August 20, 2011 in Movies

SOooo we just watched this movie last weekend and meant to post our thoughts sooner but we’ve been real busy lately. The movie was awesome, a nice change of pace from all the special FX filled movies we’ve been watching all summer. Anyone interested in history should take a look, we should actually say “recent history”, since these times weren’t as long ago as many people like to think. It’s performances makes it shine and its definitely worth watching.

Capitalism: A Love Story: A Review

by dfrnt on October 7, 2009 in Movies

Another quick review, basically, the movie was awesome, we both loved it.  EVERYONE needs to watch this film.  Moore keeps his attacks fair, going after both parties.  How the hell can our government have ex CEOs and presidents of investment and insurance companies working for it, then let them decide who gets bailed out with our cash!?  Let me guess, their former investment and insurance companies? We’ll leave it at that, complete crap, everyone, wake up!!!!!

ZombieLand Review

We’ll keep this one short, saw Zombieland, one of us liked it, the other one thought it was aiiight.  If you’ve never seen Adventureland, you probably thought this was good, if you have seen Adventureland then you know Zombieland was sorta like Adventureland plus zombies but not anywhere near as good.  If you like zombies, you probly thought this was good, if you don’t care either way, then you probably thought it was…. aight.

GI Joe Review…..

by dfrnt on August 11, 2009 in Movies

DFRNTjoe2_WEB

Special Effects, lasers and explosions make everything better right?  Nope, sadly we went to check this movie out, despite the negative reviews, hoping the critics were out of touch, or maybe that there would be something entertaining happening somewhere, or that it would at least be better than transformers 2.  We were wrong all over the place.  This has to be the last movie we go watch just because we want popcorn and soda, we like doing these reviews but we’ve been disappointed too many times in a row knowingly going into bad movies, Wolverine, Transformers 2, Bruno, and now this one.

First off the lead actor, Tatum, I’m sure he’s a cool guy in real life, but as far as acting goes, he’s hoooorrible.  His voice is so monotone, it feels like he’s just reading off a script, sorta like,…”hi my name is Duke, I like to eat sandwiches, oh no, there’s a bomb going off, and I like french fries too….”  do you realize how when you read the bomb part you didn’t change how you said that, a sense of urgency was missing?  That’s the way he reads all his lines.  And every time he had a close up, he wouldn’t stop flexing his jaw muscles, every single time….  every …. single …. time.  Someone must like it.

Halfway through the movie I realized I was hating it, so I stopped and tried to get into it, really give it a chance.  It never worked.  I just kept thinking to myself, they obviously had a ton of cash to throw around with all the effects, there was some cool action sequences here and there, how hard can it be to make a good action movie?

There were too many problems with this film, generic characters, the coolest one never said a word, perhaps that’s why we liked him, crappy dialogue would have ruined him too, throw in a lame romance, an evil scientist who willingly put himself in the situation he’s in, yet blames others somehow, Duke puts everyone in danger by not taking out his girl as soon as possible yet he’s a good soldier, the list goes on and on.  Sadly, even with all the negatives, it still makes almost $60 million in its opening weekend.

Don’t let the studios keep making horrible movies like this, go watch District 9 this weekend and skip Joe if you didnt catch it last week, if you really need to satisfy your military/ninja cravings go rent 1985′s “American Ninja” a  much better film.

Bruno Movie Review

by dfrnt on July 11, 2009 in Movies

DFRNTbrunoWEB

$11 versus Bruno?  $11 wins every time .  Seriously we saw this movie and I guess there’s a few “funny” moments but we left the theatre not believing we payed to watch that thing.

I really liked Borat, but there’s a huge difference between the two movies.  Borat was about someone new in this country who makes every new thing he experiences funny, buying a car, driving, whatever.  Bruno is about a gay fashion designer who tries to make others feel uncomfortable with the fact that he’s gay.  Making people uncomfortable is interesting a few times, but it gets old quick, and is never really funny.  The people in the audience thought it was funny I guess, cause there were laughs, so I guess we’re the odd ones out.

The movie feels a lot more staged than Borat too, it’s hard to believe that any of the people in the movie actually thought this guy was for real, with Borat that didn’t feel like the case.  The only reason we keep comparing it to Borat is because we are fans of movies like this, just not this one.

In our opinion, do not waste your money, wait to rent it.

Public Enemies Review

by dfrnt on July 7, 2009 in Movies

DFRNTenemies_web

We saw the movie this weekend, review coming after we get home from work…..   UPDATE!!!

So a bit late but here it is.  Overall, we both liked the movie, alot more than we thought we would based on the negative reviews we heard going into it.

THE BAD.  The movie feels a bit like you’re watching a History channel documentary, a lot of events but no insight.  You never really get close to any of the characters, you don’t learn why they are doing what they’re doing.  You learn enough I suppose, Depp has always been into crime, that’s his thing, but you don’t learn why, they mention something about his dad, but not enough.  That’s just one example, but overall that’s how the characters work in this film.  Other than the distance you feel, and the characters being a bit flat, I guess the ending happens pretty abruptly, yet you see it coming minutes before it happens, no twist.  But it’s based on true events, so it is how it is.

THE GOOD.  If you’re into history and mafia films, the story of Dillinger in his final days, who I knew nothing about, is interesting enough to go watch this film.  This film shows the beginnings of the FBI, interstate crime penalties, illegal gambling bookies and the end of professional bank robbers during the Depression.  You see how the FBI used crooks to eliminate other crooks.  Depp is great in the film, brightening up the film at moments with the personality I wish this film had more of.

CONCLUSION  Although the film characters feel a bit distant and underdeveloped, the personalities are clear and the true events are pretty awesome.  If you’re a fan of films like the Godfather, then we say go watch it.  It was better than Transformers 2, but not as good as films like the Goodfellas.

“Rudo y Cursi” Review

by dfrnt on June 3, 2009 in Movies

Saw this movie last night, check out the trailer and our review below…

So this movie was pretty much awesome, for some reason I had low expectations going into it, I heard a negative review here and there before watching it. Now that I think of it, they were pretty picky critiques, like the accents were too strong, the actors were great but the story was so so, etc……
